چکیده

Polarization switching of light in a degenerate two-level medium, known as the Λ-configuration, is described. The polarization dynamics of light pulses is investigated by means of the inverse-scattering transform. The mathematical formalism of the inverse-scattering transform that takes into account the initial fluctuations of the medium polarization components corresponding to atomic transitions between the excited state and the two degenerate ground sub-levels in Λ-configuration atomic system is formulated. The characteristic switching length is evaluated via the physical parameters of the prepared medium and the optical pulse. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Towards Measurement of Polarization Properties of Skin using the Ellipsometry Technique

Introduction: The human skin is an active medium from the optical point of view. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques employing light are increasing. Current optical techniques are based on the measurement of the intensity of reflected absorbed or backscattered light from or within skin. Studies have shown that biological tissues, and in particular skin, demonstrate polarization...

Nonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium interacting with two quantized fields

We study linear and nonlinear optical properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium interacting with two quantized laser fields for adiabatic EIT case. We show that EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion. Kerr and higher order nonlinear refractive-index coefficients are also calculated in a completely analytical form. It is indicated that EIT medium exhibits giant resonantl...

Random polarization dynamics in a resonant optical medium.

Random optical-pulse polarization switching along an active optical medium in the Λ configuration with spatially disordered occupation numbers of its lower energy sublevel pair is described using the idealized integrable Maxwell-Bloch model. Analytical results describing the light polarization-switching statistics for the single self-induced transparency pulse are compared with statistics obtai...

Coupled Maxwell-pseudospin equations for investigation of self-induced transparency effects in a degenerate three-level quantum system in two dimensions: Finite-difference time-domain study

We extend to more than one spatial dimension the semiclassical full-wave vector Maxwell-Bloch equations for the purpose of achieving an adequate and rigorous description of ultrashort pulse propagation in optical waveguides containing resonant nonlinearities. Our considerations are based on the generalized pseudospin formalism introduced by Hioe and Eberly @Phys. Rev. Lett. 47, 838 ~1981!# for ...

Piezoelectric contributions to pulsed degenerate four-wave mixing

In solid-state materials lacking a center of symmetry, cascaded second-order nonlinear optical effects, especially the combination of optical rectification and the linear electro-optic effect, are an important contribution to degenerate four-wave mixing ~DFWM!, an experimental tool widely used to measure the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. This quantity determines the magnitude of...
